Data processing

Appropriate data recording software as well as efficient navigation solutions are required for high-speed archaeological prospection. The huge amount of data generated by the remote sensing and geophysical prospection measurements require appropriate data processing and visualization tools. Data acquired with motorized survey systems requires correct interpolation algorithms. New filtering tools for the removal of disturbing noise and for the generation of optimised final data images need to be developed. The effect of the surface conditions and topography has to be taken into account. Different data collected at various scales needs to be merged and integrated into a GIS geo-database prior to archaeological interpretation. Novel tools for data visualisation and exploration of the information in 3D will permit improved analysis.

Remote sensing methods

Remote sensing referes to all aerial sensor technologies, in contrast to the ground based geophysical prospection methods.

Aerial photography

Airborne laser scanning

Airborne imaging spectroscopy

Geophysical prospection methods

Near-surface geophysical prospection can under suitable conditions be used to gain information about the physical properties of the subsurface.

Magnetic prospection

Magnetic susceptibility measurements

Ground penetrating radar (GPR)

Data interpretation & analysis

Special data processing, visualisation and analysis methods are being tested and developed.
